Broken Windows

Welcome to Broken Windows, the new online movement whose sole purpose is to educate average computer users about why it's best to abandon Microsoft Windows- and all of their other products- in favor of any other alternative. The reasons for this include Microsoft's unethical business practices, past and present, as well as the fact that, in the end, they simply refuse to deliver a quality product. And you shouldn't have to put up with unreliable Windows. Just the same as you'd get rid of a car which always breaks down, so should you do the same with an operating system.

There are literally hundreds of other operating systems that a person can choose from, but we will attempt to highlight some of the best choices; "best" as far as stability, and ease of use. After all, these two qualifiers are the main things that an average user would want to shoot for.

If you're reading this now, then clearly you're looking to switch. I could easily explain the many reasons why one should, but there are already many sites who do this, and besides, I'm sure you already know those for yourself.

The infamous Windows “Blue Screen of Death.” Why do people continue to put up with it?

There are a whole host of other nice OS' out there; some are professionally-designed by the best in the world, some are written by volunteers who write not for a paycheck, but out of their passion for quality results. And often, these two qualifiers overlap.

One point to consider, just for a metaphor, is the field of music. Those who TRULY love music will most often appreciate the underground artists, the true musicians, who write from the heart, creating some of the most passionate sounds around. Otherwise there are conductors and writers who articulately piece together quality symphonies to create a Rolls Royce for the ears. But either way, neither of these camps tend to enjoy overpaid MTV artists who fail to deliver quality music.

Everyone does indeed want something better for their home computer. Most don't consider the concept of switching because perhaps the idea never occured to them, maybe they're a bit technophobic or afraid of trying something new, just sticking with what they know and hoping that things get better. Well, after over a decade, things really haven't gotten much better over at Microsoft.

That's where this movement comes in. I want to help you find a better means for yourself; a system which is better-designed out of the passion of those who write it, who are generally alot closer to their user communities, who want to ensure that theirs is the best you could ever use.

Most people who are members of this movement are already users of Non-Windows systems, and are damn proud of it too. They have good systems, and they know it! All in all, system failures are far less frequent on Non-Windows systems, the developers constantly strive to improve, and things get better all the time. In fact, I honestly can't think of a single person who has left their Non-Windows system in order to return to Windows. Not a single one. And I guarantee you'll be the same way once you do too.

The vast majority of people only really use a computer for common tasks, or otherwise entertainment and media-related things, and any operating system can do these just fine. YouTube, Facebook, and your music will all be of perfectly equal quality on these new choices. However, the only computer users who will have a hard time switching, are hardcore PC gamers, as most gaming companies only seem to make their games for Windows. But even then, we have wonderful projects such as Wine, VMWare, and VirtualBox, which will allow you to run many Windows-based programs on your new system. These projects are not yet perfect, but they're always being built and are always being made better.

As long as you're not a PC gamer, then go ahead and consider the options available. View my "Should I Switch?" page to determine whether switching truly is in your best interest, and if it is, then continue to my "Operating Systems" page to see some of the best picks for the average person.

And hey, I've even gotten my own mom to ditch Windows. She now uses Linux Mint and enjoys it just fine. If she can do it, then you can too!
